Asthma & COPD

Our Chronic Disease Nurses are trained in the management of asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease). All asthma and COPD patients should attend the surgery annually for a full check.

Blood pressure/hypertension

A blood pressure test is a simple way of checking if your blood pressure is too high or too low.

Blood pressure is the term used to describe the strength with which your blood pushes on the sides of your arteries as it’s pumped around your body.

Find out more information about your blood pressure on the NHS website here.

Blood tests

Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test.

For example, a blood test can be used to:

  • assess your general state of health
  • check if you have an infection
  • see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are working
  • screen for certain genetic conditions

Most blood tests only take a few minutes to complete and are carried out at your GP surgery or local hospital by a doctor, nurse or phlebotomist (a specialist in taking blood samples).

Read about some common types of blood test on the NHS website here.

To find out your blood test result please click here for further information on your practice's Test Results page.

Cervical screening

Our practice nurses carry out cervical screening unless patients request otherwise. All women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 will be invited for a smear in accordance with the national recall policy (unless the cytologist/consultant recommends repeating the smear more often).

  • Cervical screening (a smear test) checks the health of your cervix. The cervix is the opening to your womb from your vagina.
  • It’s not a test for cancer, it’s a test to help prevent cancer.
  • All women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 should be invited by letter.
  • During the screening appointment, a small sample of cells will be taken from your cervix.
  • The sample is checked for certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can cause changes to the cells of your cervix. These are called “high risk” types of HPV.
  • If these types of HPV are not found, you do not need any further tests.
  • If these types of HPV are found, the sample is then checked for any changes in the cells of your cervix. These can then be treated before they get a chance to turn into cervical cancer.
  • You’ll get your results by letter, usually in about 2 weeks. It will explain what happens next.
  • You still need a smear test even if you have had the HPV vaccination.

You can find out further information on the NHS website here.

Childhood immunisations

Our nurses offer a comprehensive childhood immunisation service. When your baby is due its first immunisations, you will be sent an appointment for these and for your baby’s 8 week check up. We will then ask you to book further appointments to ensure that your child is fully immunised.

You can find out further information on childhood immunisations on the NHS website here.

Contraception

All doctors can discuss your contraceptive choices, start pills and injections, and provide emergency contraception.

Practice nurses can carry out routine pill checks and give depo provera injections for women already using those methods.

A number of our nurses and GPs are trained and experienced in the fitting of coils and implants (please book a phone appointment first with one of them to talk it through).

All doctors can check and remove coils (please book a routine appointment).

All doctors and nurses can provide you with a sexual health screening kit (for Chlamydia and gonorrhoea). These can also be collected at reception. If you have symptoms that concern you or require treatment after being notified by a sexual partner please book with one of the doctors or the express team.

If you are under 21 and have a condom card please ask at reception for free condoms.

Diabetes

We have specialist Diabetic Nurses in our practices. All patients with diabetes should attend the surgery annually for a full diabetic review, even if they are being seen by the secondary care specialist teams. Diabetic checks last 30 minutes.

This check is an opportunity for you to discuss your health, medication and well being and to think about changes that you can make to improve it. A care plan will be agreed as part of your appointment.

Seasonal vaccinations

Flu vaccination

Annually in the autumn and winter we run a programme to vaccinate patients against influenza. All patients over 65 or in the ‘at risk’ categories are eligible for immunisation. The categories are

  • Respiratory Disease including Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Renal Failure
  • Children aged 2-4 (Nasal spray)

Find out more about the Flu vaccination on the NHS website here.

Pneumovax vaccination

If you are over 65 you will also be eligible for a pneumovax immunisation (if you have not had this previously and they last 10 years). Please mention this to the receptionists when you telephone us to make your appointment.

Shingles vaccination

If you are aged 78 or 79 you are also entitled to a shingles vaccination.

Travel health

Stay safe and healthy abroad

If you are travelling abroad you may need to be vaccinated. Please make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss the vaccinations you will need, which will depend on where you are travelling.

It is important to make this initial appointment at least eight weeks before you travel so that the vaccines can be ordered. You will need a second appointment to receive the vaccinations.  Your second appointment should be at least two weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription which cost more than the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
